RCSI Online Education – Mental Health Educate – Youth Mental Health – Resources

RCSI University of Medicine & Health Sciences

RCSI Online Education – Mental Health Educate – Youth Mental Health – Resources

Mental Health Educate offers a range of youth-focused resources to educators who want to explore mental health and related issues with young people in an educational context. It is important to note that it is not a whole-school programme or approach. It was developed as a means of ensuring free access to material that had been developed by a team of academics in the Department of Psychiatry, RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences and a number of collaborators from the Arts, online and educational sectors.

All of the resources on Mental Health Educate are grounded in research. Some of that research was carried out with young people in Ireland.

The video presentations in our Introduction to Youth Mental Health are all based on empirical findings from international and national research studies. To promote engagement by young people, each video is between 6 and 7 minutes in length, focusing on key messages for young people.

The Youth Mental Health Animation series is based on findings from a qualitative research study with Irish youth, the quotes from which were used to create the scripts. The animations can be used to complement any presentation on youth mental health, highlighting young people’s lived experiences of anxiety, depression, being bullied, loneliness, feeling different and poor body image. All animations also highlight constructive ways to deal with these difficulties and different ways of getting support.

Mental Health Educate also offers some creative biologically-oriented resources, such as the Journey through the Brain book. The book combines details about the anatomy and function of the brain in the style of a mindfulness colouring book. The illustrations bring the science of the brain alive using visual metaphors and the option to colour in the images offers a unique wellbeing-promoting mindfulness exercise for students.

The intersection between science and mental health is also explored in the lessons about Cannabis and Mental Health and in the material about memory, brain scanning and research in our companion website, A Young Person’s Guide to the Mind

Help-seeking is supported by the lesson plans on Exploring Local Mental Health Services, offering young people a non-stigmatising way to gather information on all available supports in their local area. These lesson plans will also yield an important resource for the school about what supports are available to young people

We wish you all the best in using our material to explore the important issue of mental health with young people. We encourage you to listen to our Tips for Running Mental Health sessions video on our website and familiarise yourself with all of the material and related resources before using them.

Clear and simple explanations by Lorna Lopez accompany each image. Additional educational notes are provided. Learners are also encouraged to spend time colouring in the images. Exploring the richness of East Asian, Islamic and Western manuscript and printing traditions

Chester Beatty

Exploring the richness of East Asian, Islamic and Western manuscript and printing traditions

Arts of the Book, a permanent exhibition of almost 600 objects from the museum’s collections displays books from the ancient world, including the world famous Chester Beatty Love Poems (c.1160 BC), Egyptian Books of the Dead and beautifully illuminated European manuscripts. One of the highlights is the display of Western book-bindings (5th-20th century) and Old Master prints. The exhibition also explores the arts of the book in the Middle East and India, with examples of narrative illustration, portraiture, fine calligraphy, mapping, and the use-life of books – how books reflect their readers, and how artworks on paper were collected in albums. Highlights from East Asia include one of the finest collections of Chinese jade books in the world, Japanese picture-scrolls depicting fables and legends, and deluxe woodblock prints. Audio-visual programmes complement the exhibition, helping the visitor to learn more about the arts of the book throughout the world

Emergency Knowledge: The Missing Archives

Dublin City Arts Office

Emergency Knowledge: The Missing Archives

The exhibition will be opened by Mary McCarthy, Director of Crawford Gallery of Art, Cork.

Ever-increasing numbers of people and populations are experiencing life as an extended state of emergency. In such circumstances, local, regional, national and international responses are often predicated on the notion of a state of exception. What if the state of exception becomes the conditions of life: the refugee camp becomes home for several generations or a 6-month detainment in Direct Provision becomes an entire childhood?

Vagabond Reviews initiated Emergency Knowledge: The Missing Archives as a visual arts project that combines a rigorous examination of notions of emergency with archival practices of recovery and (re)construction. Vagabond Reviews have been working with key individuals / activists, we’ve called them constructivists, in order to produce an assemblage of archival traces of specific, situated emergencies. Over a series of diagnostic conversations, each constructivist was asked to consider their situated emergency through three key registers: the visual, the acoustic and the lexical (words, documents and books). Presented as a series of Archive Pods, photography, sound, text and film have been interlaced in order to create a hybrid space of inquiry at The LAB Gallery.

66 Voices

Step into the immersive field of “Voices”, a sensory led installation designed by Nicola Byrne and Tadhg Nolan. This transformative installation amplifies the silent struggles of 66 students grappling with the overwhelming weights of financial stress in each of

their academic journeys. Nicola and Tadhg embarked on a profound exploration, engaging in extensive interviews and audio recordings with students from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. The result is a space that looks past the boundaries of conventional art installations, weaving together the authentic narratives of these individuals through a symphony of voices and carefully crafted typography. As you navigate through the space, you will find yourself enveloped in the raw emotion and palpable tension that mirrors the daily challenges faced by students. The design, guided by the genuine voices of those interviewed, serves as a powerful medium to convey the countless stories of resilience, sacrifice, and perseverance against the backdrop of financial strain in Ireland.

Mental Health Educate  Animations – Youth mental health educational resources for teachers and other educators

Mental Health Educate is a website that provides access to a range of resources about young people’s mental health. The resources are primarily aimed at educators but are free to use by anyone with an interest in exploring issues affecting young people’s mental health. All of the resources were developed by clinicians, researchers and academics at the Department of Psychiatry, RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences along with a number of collaborators across the education, Arts and online sectors. The target age range for most of the resources is young people aged 13-21 years. Some of the resources are available in both English and Irish.

Six animations explore the lived experiences of struggling with anxiety, feeling different, depression, loneliness, being bullied and body image. Five of the animations are available to watch in both English and Irish. The English versions are also subtitled. The animations can be integrated into any sessions with young people exploring these issues. That includes our Introduction to Youth Mental Health presentations. At the end of the page, you can access some complementary educational resources to help explore these themes and issues with young people.

Pilates online with GreenTeam Fitness – Improvers level

Pilates online with GreenTeam Fitness – Improvers level

Pilates is a form of exercise that strengthens and stretches muscles, especially ‘core’ muscles, as well as working on posture, alignment and balance. All you need is a mat and a quiet place, and a willingness to give it a go! This class is best suited to people who maybe have done a little bit of Pilates before, or who have a reasonable level of fitness, however, beginners are still welcome as it is go-at-your-own-pace and you can take breaks and just watch whenever necessary. The class is through Zoom, so make sure you have Zoom downloaded on your phone or tablet in advance, no need if you are using a PC or laptop.

Colour and Emotion: A Learning Exchange between NCAD and Spirasi

A Learning Exchange: NCAD and Spirasi

NCAD welcomed a creative group of learners from Spirasi to their campus on Thomas Street, as part of their Access Easter Art Camp. NCAD lecturer and artists, Dr Silvia Loeffler, with support from Olena Fadieieva, a Fashion Design student, facilitated a creative arts workshop entitled Colour and Emotion.  As part of the Dublin Learning Festival, Spirasi will welcome Silvia and Olena to their campus and they will develop the theme of Colour and Emotion through the exploration of landscapes and seascapes of old (our ancestors) and new (places we want to go and appreciate now).  The Dublin Learning Festival presents wonderful opportunities to find out about the learning experiences available in our neighbourhood through a joyful and creative process.
