OPEN LEARNING- A flexible way of studying part-time in Dublin

Open Learning was an initiative ran by several organisations in the Dublin Learning City umbrella

Open Learning meant that students could fit university around their lives. Whether they were looking to progress their careers or had just finished school and were wondering if university was for them, Open Learning fitted around their schedules and gave them all the benefits of being a full-time student, without the full-time commitment. Open Learning was available in four institutions in Dublin.

Through this programme, students could discover their part-time options at Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art Design Technology, Marino Institute of Education, National College of Art and Design and University College Dublin.

It was something to consider for those who:

  • Needed a more flexible study schedule
  • Did not yet qualify for entry to an undergraduate degree
  • Wanted to get a feel for academic life before starting a full degree
  • Were interested in one or more of the module topics available and wanted to learn more from experts in that field

Former students shared their experiences:

As an alumnus, I enjoyed being part of the UCD community again. I had taken Physics as the minor subject for my degree, but they didn’t teach Astronomy back then, and I found the content fascinating.

Attending a lecture was a wonderful experience.

I wished to continue to the next level and eventually become fluent in French.

It was an excellent opportunity to broaden horizons and sample university education.

For me, it was life-changing and broadened my horizons, gave me confidence in myself and hopefully made me a more interesting person.

I enjoyed being included in college life and being treated equally with other students.

There was a superb choice of courses, and it was so good to broaden my knowledge and interests.
