Inclusive Learning Settings: The future of education.
Education has always been highly valued in Ireland acting as a central plank in the economic, social and cultural development of Irish society. At primary, post-primary, further and higher education levels, efforts are being made to make education more accessible to groups that have traditionally been marginalised by the system. This includes those living in areas that have traditionally been disadvantaged, the Traveller community, mature students, ethnic and linguistic minority students, and refugees. Emphasis is shifting from a ‘one size fits all’ model to nurturing individual needs, regardless of age or cultural background, in traditional and non-traditional settings.
Through this session, we will explore the development of learning settings and how we can reshape contemporary beliefs to influence the future of accessible and inclusive learning.
In person: Invite only.

Brian Friel: Ireland’s Greatest Playwright?
The drama of Brian Friel (1929-2015) won consistent critical acclaim throughout his lifetime; bold, innovative, and comic, his was an art which illuminated the complexity of the constructions of memory, history, and Irish identity, and went on to become an all-pervading influence in Irish drama and beyond. Though initially a schoolteacher, his dedication to become a playwright was finally rewarded in 1964 with the success of his iconic play Philadelphia, Here I Come!, a play which poignantly, and comically, examined father-son relationships. Fifteen years later, Friel would produce Faith Healer, a haunting and affecting drama which comprises a series of four conflicting monologues which asks the question of how sure we really are of our own memories and identities. Translations, is arguably the apex of Friel’s work, as he delves into the 19th century to examine the present day; did we give up our language? Or have we made it our own? What role does history play in the present? This seminar examines the nature and evolution of Friel’s drama, and makes the case for his enduring legacy as one of Ireland’s greatest artists.
