Using a webcam as a microscope – RCSI Event
Humans are curious animals. We explore a lot of the world around us using our eyes. Things so far away or so small that they escape our eyes’ abilities have always fascinated us. That’s why I have become a researcher because I wanted to find out more about these hidden worlds. And that’s why mankind has invented microscopes which help us to see the life at its smallest scale (and telescopes to look at distant galaxies).
Modern microscopes can be complex and expensive, but the idea behind an optical microscope is rather simple. It actually is not so different from a webcam. After exploring together with the participants how the webcam lens forms an image, I will explain how we can turn a webcam into a microscope that allows us to look at cells from e.g. blood, plants, or pond water.

The Spanish Inquisition, 1400s-1800s’
This lecture examines the history of the Inquisition in Spain and Spanish America from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries. It looks its beginnings, its original mission to identify and persecute Catholic heretics of Jewish or Islamic origin, and its interactions with politics, religion, and society in 16th-century Spain. It also examines the evolving role of the Inquisition that incorporated wider concerns such as Protestantism in Spain and the prosecution of blasphemy and suspected witchcraft. In addition to those already outlined, the themes in this lecture are censorship, freemasonry, bigamy, the inquisition in America, torture, and prosecution, and the auto-da-fé.

Book Censorship in Twentieth-Century Ireland
The Censorship of Publications Act was introduced in Ireland in 1929 and remained in full force until 1967. Over the four decades of its existence some 10,000 titles were banned – almost exclusively on the ground of indecency – including significant works by the best Irish writers. This talk considers the rationale behind the censorship legislation and its impact on Irish literary and reading culture in the twentieth century. As we discuss various clashes between writers and censors, special attention will be paid to Kate O’Brien and Frank O’Connor. Examining their banned works illuminates sensitivities in the censorship system related to politics, gender, and religion, revealing how much could fit within the ground of ‘indecency’ at a time when the Irish state endeavoured to guard a specific notion of Irishness

Wine vs Global Warming
Wine grapes are one of the most sensitive crops to variations in weather patterns, putting winemakers and vine-growers at the forefront in the fight against Global Warming. For the second consecutive year we are participating in the Dublin Learning City Festival, where we will provide an online wine tasting with Global Warming and its influence on wine as the main topic.
This is a “dry” tasting so no wine will be sent to the participants, but I would suggest getting a bottle from one of the three wine regions (or the three) I will be talking about during the event. They reflect very well how the Wine Trade is reacting to Global Warming in very different ways along the planet:
Rueda in Northern Spain: you can get a nice Verdejo for around 15€ anywhere.
Puglia in Southern Italy: this is a warm wine region where full body reds like Primitivo thrive, you should be able to find a nice one for 15€ or less.
Australia is famous for both red and white wines, we’ll be trying a Chardonnay from one of the cool climate subregions such as Adelaide Hills, Mornington Peninsula, Margaret River, Geelong, Yarra Valley or Tasmania. But just get any Chardonnay from Australia for 15€ to 20€.

Bookmarks Exhibition
The Bookmarks Programme is a collaboration between Trinity Access, the Library of Trinity College, and the School of English in Trinity College. The programme sees primary school children from our partner primary schools in Dublin write and illustrate their own books over a period of two months. This is facilitated through the support and guidance of authors, artists and children’s literature specialists. The programme culminates with the publication of these books in an exhibition in the Old Library of Trinity College. The project aims to inspire children to become the next generation of storytellers and artists – in short, to tell their own stories and imagine the future. The programme supports students from three primary schools each academic year to pursue and interrogate a theme that is both relevant to their lives and inspiring to their imaginations.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a strictly private and ticketed event for participating students, families, and teachers.
