D10 launches Learning Neighbourhood

The launch concludes the UNESCO Dublin Learning City 2025 Festival

Dublin’s second Learning Neighbourhood was launched today in the Ballyfermot Civic Centre, as part of the Dublin Learning City Festival 2025. A learning neighbourhood is a thriving, dynamic area where inclusive education and lifelong learning is secured through collaboration and shared support. The area of D10 is now officially recognised by UNESCO Dublin Learning City as a learning neighbourhood. To mark this, a D10 Learning Neighbourhood Brochure has been published. This brochure will act as a living, breathing guide for locals of all the learning and educational opportunities that exist on their doorstep.

The D10 Learning Neighbourhood is supported by a dedicated working group, which includes UNESCO Dublin Learning City, Dublin City Council, City of Dublin Education and Training Board, Liffey Partnership and Sláintecare Healthy Communities. The purpose of the D10 Learning Neighbourhood Brochure is to highlight all the lifelong learning opportunities available in the D10 area for all residents, whether that is in education or training, formal or informal.

Launching this initiative, Dave O’Donovan, Cherry Orchard Project Manager said “I’m delighted to see the D10 Learning Neighbourhood brought to life today. This Learning Neighbourhood is a testament to the D10 community and the many incredible resources that exist in our locale to encourage residents to upskill, continue their education, or take up a new hobby. Hopefully, the D10 Learning Neighbourhood is a precursor to expanding the services, events and collective goodwill and the creation of branding for the area—in the next few years, we hope to see D10 Learning alongside D10Sports, D10 Events, D10 arts and more!”

Isabelle Kempf, Director of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, said “Learning neighbourhoods are vital to fostering a culture of lifelong learning and creating opportunities for entire communities. They thrive on collaboration, coalition-building, and intergenerational learning. My warmest congratulations to the city of Dublin on launching the D10 Learning Neighborhood today as part of its UNESCO Learning City efforts! This inspiring initiative will undoubtedly motivate the 350+ members of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities as we work together to make lifelong learning accessible to all.”

Denise McMorrow, Dublin Learning City Co-chairperson and on behalf of fellow co-chairperson Colum Cronin, remarked “The launch of the D10 Learning Neighbourhood is a fantastic note for our 2025 Festival to end on. By working closely with local communities to highlight the wealth of educational and learning opportunities available, we are able to encourage a year round commitment to lifelong learning in Dublin, where learning is free, fun and for everyone.”

Speaking at the Launch, Councillor Hazel de Nortúin said “The launch of the D10 Learning Neighbourhood by Dublin Learning City, and the work of the organisations in D10 to make this possible, is a fantastic development for the local community. I hope that the success of this initiative inspires and encourages other Dublin Neighbourhoods to follow in their footsteps and continue to foster accessible learning for all in our city.”

The launch of the D10 Learning Neighbourhood marks the final day of the sixth UNESCO Dublin Learning City Festival, which ran from Monday, April 7th. The Festival took place across Dublin, both online and in person, and hosted over 200 events for members of the public, all of which were free to attend.
