Ireland on Screen- UCD Lifelong Learning Free Taster Lecture

Ireland on Screen- UCD Lifelong Learning Free Taster Lecture
This lecture examines the history of Irish cinema, and interrogates the ways in which it has responded to its varying cultural contexts since the formation of the State. How has Ireland represented itself throughout the twentieth century in its efforts to build a national identity? Who are the major figures in Irish cinema, and what contributions did they make? How has Irish society been challenged by its cinematic tradition? To answer these questions, this lecture examines the cultural significance and contributions of classic Irish films including Man of Aran, The Quiet Man, The Dead, The Commitments, Intermission, and more.
*This is a once-off lecture offered as part of Dublin Learning Cities Festival 2025
