Pathways supporting life in 3rd level colleges – information for parents and students
Pathways.ie supports parents and their students as they navigate the transition to third-level education. I offer guidance on aspects of college that are rarely covered by CAO talks and Open Days. This Webinar is not about CAO applications, subject choices, leaving cert points, nor setting boundaries. Instead, it focuses on everything outside the lecture halls – helping parents and students understand the practicalities of college life. Pathways.ie will equip students and explain to their parents how to: ✔️ Navigate student health centres and counselling services. ✔️ Get assignments submitted on time with the right support. ✔️ How much part-time work is recommended. ✔️ Prepare for independent living and self-care. ✔️ Explore options when facing a late deadline. ✔️ Understand the Student Assistance Fund and emergency funds. ✔️ Manage college life with acute or chronic illnesses or disability (e.g., epilepsy, anaphylaxis, asthma). ✔️ Understand tenancy agreements and help students on their rights in the rental sector. (This is not an exhaustive list).
With over 30 years of experience as a nurse in health care and education, I am passionate about equipping parents and students with the knowledge and confidence to access supports and facilities available at 3rd level sector in Ireland. As a former third level college health nurse at IADT Dun Laoghaire and a school nurse at Newpark Comprehensive School, I have helped many students and families manage the challenges of this transition. I am also a mum to three graduates.
Through my research, I found that most parents are unaware of how student services and facilities work. Many only seek this information when their student encounters difficulties or when they hear firsthand about the services available. Once they do they want to learn more.
